Junior handicap race

Despite the cold, wet conditions 30 young people from the Poly competed in the first junior handicap race of the winter held at Churchill Playing fields in Whitley Bay.

The 1.25mile course, ran as a 2 lap course, saw youngsters from the ages of 8 up to 18 competing in this yacht handicap event.

The first to finish was 12 year old Bethany Hall, followed by 8 year old Jack Cruz and the fastest female of the evening, 15 year old Gemma Wallett. These 3 now lead the grand prix rankings going into the second race on Thursday 17th December 2009.

Anthony Wallett, at only 13 years of age, recorded the fastest time of the evening, with Gemma recording the second fastest. Third fastest runner was 18 year old Dean Scobie.

Dean, along with 16 year old Ashley Chhina, and 17 year old Chelsey Chhina also assist with the coaching of younger children at the athletics club, before then joining the older youngsters for their own training sessions.

1st: Anthony Wallett  7mins 2 secs

2nd: Dean Scobie  7mins 53 secs

3rd: Joel Miller 8mins 13 secs

Girls

1st: Gemma Wallett  7 mins 51 secs

2nd Bethany Hall  8 mins  35 secs

3rd  Vicki Tanner 8 mins 38 secs

Several of the young people are due to represent the athletics club in the opening fixture of the North Eastern Harrier cross country league, held at Farringdon School in Sunderland, on Saturday 28th November.
